Keir Starmer appoints Jeff Bezos as his “first buddy”
Tumblr media
Picks and Shovels is a new, standalone technothriller starring Marty Hench, my two-fisted, hard-fighting, tech-scam-busting forensic accountant. You can pre-order it on my latest Kickstarter, which features a brilliant audiobook read by Wil Wheaton.
Tumblr media
Turns out Donald Trump isn't the only world leader with a tech billionaire "first buddy" who gets to serve as an unaccountable, self-interested de facto business regulator. UK PM Keir Starmer has just handed the keys to the British economy over to Jeff Bezos.
Oh, not literally. But here's what's happened: the UK's Competitions and Markets Authority, an organisation charged with investigating and punishing tech monopolists (like Amazon) has just been turned over to Doug Gurr, the guy who used to run Amazon UK.
This is – incredibly – even worse than it sounds. Marcus Bokkerink, the outgoing head of the CMA, was amazing, and he had charge over the CMA's Digital Markets Unit, the largest, best-staffed technical body of any competition regulator, anywhere in the world. The DMU uses its investigatory powers to dig deep into complex monopolistic businesses like Amazon, and just last year, the DMU was given new enforcement powers that would let it custom-craft regulations to address tech monopolization (again, like Amazon's).
But it's even worse. The CMA and DMU are the headwaters of a global system of super-effective Big Tech regulation. The CMA's deeply investigated reports on tech monopolists are used as the basis for EU regulations and enforcement actions, and these actions are then re-run by other world governments, like South Korea and Japan:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/04/10/an-injury-to-one/#is-an-injury-to-all
The CMA is the global convener and ringleader in tech antitrust, in other words. Smaller and/or poorer countries that lack the resources to investigate and build a case against US Big Tech companies have been able to copy-paste the work of the CMA and hold these companies to account. The CMA invites (or used to invite) all of these competition regulators to its HQ in Canary Wharf for conferences where they plan global strategy against these monopolists:
https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cma-data-technology-and-analytics-conference-2022-registration-308678625077
Firing the guy who is making all this happening and replacing him with Amazon's UK boss is a breathtaking display of regulatory capture by Starmer, his business secretary Jonathan Reynolds, and his exchequer, Rachel Reeves.
But it gets even worse, because Amazon isn't just any tech monopolist. Amazon is a many-tentacled kraken built around an e-commerce empire. Antitrust regulators elsewhere have laid bare how Amazon uses that retail monopoly to take control over whole economies, while raising prices and crushing small businesses.
To understand Amazon's market power, first you have to understand "monopsonies" – markets dominated by buyers (monopolies are markets dominated by sellers – Amazon is both a monopolist and a monopsonist). Monopsonies are far more dangerous than monopolies, because they are easier to establish and easier to defend against competitors. Say a single retailer accounts for 30% of your sales: there isn't a business in the world that can survive an overnight 30% drop in sales, so that 30% market share might as well be 100%. Once your order is big enough that canceling it would bankrupt your supplier, you have near-total control over that supplier.
Amazon boasts about this. They call it "the flywheel": Amazon locks in shoppers (by getting them to prepay for a year's worth of shipping in advance, via Prime). The fact that a business can't sell to a large proportion of households if it's not on Amazon gives Amazon near-total power over that business. Amazon uses that power to demand discounts and charge junk fees to the businesses that rely on it. This allows it to lower prices, which brings in more customers, which means that even more businesses have to do business with Amazon to stay afloat:
https://vimeo.com/739486256/00a0a7379a
That's Amazon's version, anyway. In reality, it's a lot scuzzier. Amazon doesn't just demand deep discounts from its suppliers – it demand unsustainable discounts from them. For example, Amazon targeted small publishers with a program called the "Gazelle Project." Jeff Bezos told his negotiators to bring down these publishers "the way a cheetah would pursue a sickly gazelle":
https://archive.nytimes.com/bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/10/22/a-new-book-portrays-amazon-as-bully/
The idea was to get a bunch of cheap books for the Kindle to help it achieve critical mass, at the expense of driving these publishers out of business. They were a kind of disposable rocket stage for Amazon.
Deep discounts aren't the only way that Amazon feeds off its suppliers: it also lards junk-fee atop junk-fee. For every pound Amazon makes from its customers, it rakes in 45-51p in fees:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/11/29/aethelred-the-unready/#not-one-penny-for-tribute
Now, just like there's no business that can survive losing 30% of its sales overnight, there's also no business that can afford to hand 45-51% of its gross margin to a retailer. For businesses to survive at all on Amazon, they have to jack their prices up – way up. However, Amazon has an anticompetitive deal called "most favoured nation status" that forces suppliers to sell their goods on Amazon at the same price as they sell them elsewhere (even from their own stores). So when companies raise their prices in order to pay ransom to Amazon, they have to raise their prices everywhere. Far from being a force for low prices, Amazon makes prices go up everywhere, from the big Tesco's to the corner shop:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/04/25/greedflation/#commissar-bezos
Amazon makes so much money off of this scam that it doesn't have to pay anything to ship its own goods – the profits from overcharging merchants for "fulfillment by Amazon" pay for all the shipping, on everything Amazon sells:
https://cdn.ilsr.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/AmazonMonopolyTollbooth-2023.pdf
Amazon competes with its own sellers, but unlike those sellers, it doesn't have to pay a 45-51% rake – and it can make its competitor-customers cover the full cost of its own shipping! On top of that, Amazon maintains the pretense that its headquarters are in Luxembourg, the tax- and crime-haven, and pays a fraction of the taxes that British businesses pay to HMRC (and that's not counting the 45-51% tax they pay to Jeff Bezos's monoposony).
That's not the only way that Amazon unfairly competes with British businesses, though: Amazon uses its position as a middleman between buyers and sellers to identify the most successful products sold by its own customers. Then it copies those products and sells them below the original inventor's costs (because it gets free shipping, pays no tax, and doesn't have to pay its own junk fees), and drives those businesses into the ground. Even Jeff "Project Gazelle" Bezos seems to understand that this is a bad look, which is why he perjured himself to the American Congress when he was questioned under oath about it:
https://www.bbc.com/news/business-58961836
Amazon then places its knockoff products above the original goods on its search results page. Amazon makes $38b selling off placement on these search pages, and the top results for an Amazon search aren't the best matches for your query – they're the ones that pay the most. On average, Amazon's top result for a search is 29% more expensive than the best match on the site. On average, the top row of results is 25% more expensive than the best match on the site. On average, Amazon buries the best result for your search 17 places down the results page:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/11/03/subprime-attention-rent-crisis/#euthanize-rentiers
Amazon, in other words, acts like the business regulator for the economies it dominates. It decides what can be sold, and at what prices. It decides whose products come up when you search, and thus which businesses deserve to live and which ones deserve to die. An economy dominated by Amazon isn't a market economy – it's a planned economy, run by Party Secretary Bezos for the benefit of Amazon's shareholders.
Now, there is a role for a business regulator, because some businesses really don't deserve to live (because they sell harmful products, engage in deceptive practices, etc). The UK has a regulator that's in charge of this stuff: the Competition and Markets Authority, which is now going to be run by Jeff Bezos's hand-picked UK Amazon boss. That means that Amazon is now both the official and the unofficial central planner of the UK economy, with a free hand to raise prices, lower quality, and destroy British businesses, while hiding its profits in Luxemourg and starving the exchequer of taxes.
The "first buddy" role that Keir Starmer just handed over to Jeff Bezos is, in every way, more generous than the first buddy deal Trump gave Elon Musk.
Starmer's government claims they're doing this for "growth" but Amazon isn't a force for growth, it's force for extraction. It is a notorious underpayer of its labour force, a notorious tax-cheat, and a world-beating destroyer of local economies, local jobs, and local tax bases. Contrary to Amazon's own self-mythologizing, it doesn't deliver lower prices – it raises prices throughout the economy. It doesn't improve quality – this is a company whose algorithmic recommendation system failed to recognize that an "energy drink" was actually its own drivers' bottled piss, which it then promoted until it was the best-selling energy drink on the platform:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/10/20/release-energy/#the-bitterest-lemon
There's a reason that the UK, the EU, Japan and South Korea found it so easy to collaborate on antitrust cases against American companies: these are all countries whose competition law was rewritten by American technocrats during the Marshall Plan, modeled on the US's own laws. The bedrock of US competition law is 1890's Sherman Act, whose author, Senator John Sherman, declared that:
If we will not endure a King as a political power we should not endure a King over the production, transportation, and sale of the necessaries of life. If we would not submit to an emperor we should not submit to an autocrat of trade with power to prevent competition and to fix the price of any commodity.
https://pluralistic.net/2022/02/20/we-should-not-endure-a-king/
Jeff Bezos is the autocrat of trade that John Sherman warned us about, 135 years ago. And Keir Starmer just abdicated in his favour.

Turning Panic Into Action: Astraweb’s Client Centered Process
Tumblr media
When Jane Doe first reached out to Astraweb, she was overwhelmed with panic and uncertainty. Her life savings, heavily invested in cryptocurrency, had abruptly disappeared following a severe market crash. What initially felt like an irreversible loss soon transformed into a hopeful journey toward recovery all thanks to Astraweb’s dedicated, client-centered process.
The First Contact: Providing Calm, Reassurance, and Genuine Understanding
The difference began immediately at the first point of contact. Many companies in the digital asset recovery space treat clients as case numbers rather than individuals, but Astraweb prides itself on a profoundly human approach. From the moment Jane connected with their team, she was met with calm professionalism and empathetic understanding. Astraweb’s experts didn’t just collect the basic facts of her situation; they invested time in learning about her unique concerns, fears, and goals.
This personalized attention is critical. Financial loss, especially in the volatile cryptocurrency market, is not just about money it’s deeply tied to emotional well-being and future security. By acknowledging Jane’s distress and validating her fears, Astraweb’s team immediately alleviated much of her initial panic. They reassured her that despite the challenging circumstances, recovery was possible and that Astraweb would support her every step of the way. This empathetic approach planted the seeds of hope and trust that would sustain Jane through the recovery process.
Transparency and Clear Communication: Building Trust Through Every Step
One of the cornerstones of Astraweb’s client-centered methodology is transparency. Jane was kept fully informed from the outset, with the team providing clear, jargon-free explanations of the entire recovery process. Rather than leaving her uncertain or confused, Astraweb made sure she understood each step, from preliminary case assessment to the complex asset tracing and retrieval efforts ahead.
Regular, timely updates ensured that Jane never felt left in the dark. She received progress reports outlining milestones achieved, any obstacles encountered, and the strategies planned moving forward. This ongoing dialogue was more than just information sharing it was a partnership. Jane had the opportunity to ask questions, raise concerns, and engage actively in decision-making. Astraweb’s responsiveness and clarity gave her a sense of control and confidence, which is often lacking when facing financial recovery situations
Tumblr media
Strategic Action and Efficient Recovery: Delivering Results with Precision and Care
With a thorough plan in place, Astraweb’s team mobilized swiftly and efficiently. Their approach was methodical and tailored to Jane’s specific case. Leveraging cutting-edge technology and deep expertise in blockchain analysis and digital forensics, they navigated the complexities inherent in cryptocurrency recovery.
What sets Astraweb apart is not only their technical prowess but also their commitment to aligning every action with the client’s best interests. For Jane, this meant careful management of sensitive data and continuous coordination to ensure all efforts supported her recovery goals. The team’s professionalism was evident in their precision and tenacity, persistently pursuing leads and unraveling the often opaque paths that digital assets can take.
Over time, their dedication paid off. Astraweb successfully recovered a significant portion of Jane’s lost funds. This achievement was more than just a financial victory it was a powerful restoration of Jane’s peace of mind and future stability.
Final Steps: Restoring Financial Security and Empowering Confidence
When Jane received the final recovery statement, the relief and gratitude she experienced were profound. Astraweb’s seamless process had not only restored her financial security but also transformed a traumatic event into a story of empowerment. The client-centered approach meant Jane never felt like a passive bystander; instead, she was an informed, engaged partner in reclaiming her assets.
Beyond the monetary recovery, Jane gained something invaluable a renewed sense of control over her financial destiny. Astraweb’s dedication to transparent communication and compassionate case management helped her move past fear and uncertainty. She emerged with greater knowledge of digital asset management and an increased ability to face future financial challenges with confidence and clarity.
Tumblr media
Astraweb’s Commitment: More Than Recovery, A Partnership
Jane’s story illustrates the core philosophy that drives Astraweb’s work: every client deserves more than just technical recovery services they deserve empathy, clarity, and partnership. The company understands that behind every lost asset is a person’s hopes, dreams, and security at stake.
For those facing the daunting prospect of lost cryptocurrency or other digital assets, Astraweb’s process offers a path forward. Through empathy-driven service, transparent communication, and technical excellence, they prove that even the most complex and distressing financial setbacks can be addressed with care and effectiveness.
If you or someone you know finds themselves in a similar predicament, Astraweb stands ready to provide expert guidance and dedicated support at every stage of recovery.

A Way Back Home | Part 3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Plot: After fighting criminals for the first time with Peter, you get infected by a suspicious smoke that was thrown at you. You learn what it is and suddenly things between you and Peter begin to change.
Pairing: Peter Parker (Tom Holland) x Reader
Warnings: smut (it’s literally pure filth, it’s great 🤣), swearing
Masterlist and Requests/Prompts
Tumblr media
You and Peter were escorted to the police station, still clad in your suits and masks. You were directed to the Forensic Specialist’s office. He had been briefed on the situation already.
“So…” he began. “There is no easy way, or discreet way, of telling you two what you’ve been exposed to, just let me explain” he said
You looked at, your stomach tightening.
“Way back in 2013, before Shield fell and the Avengers went on Hiatus, rumors went around that Hydra was creating a biological weapon, one with….odd symptoms” he said. “The idea was to distract enemies by exploiting one thing humans cannot avoid, no matter how strong they are”
“And that would be?” Peter asked.
“Lust” the doctor said
“Excuse me?” You asked.
“Well if you want me to put it bluntly I will. They created a smoke bomb with aphrodisiac properties, that once inhaled causes the victim to crave sex. But once Hydra was shut down, the prototype went missing. Turns out, after the blip, it resurfaced after being discovered in a secret bunker by individuals who were selling illegal alien technology and weapons created by Shield and Tony Stark. They started mass producing it and selling it on the black market. And you two are just a few more unfortunate victims” he mentioned.
“Is there an anecdote?” You asked
“Not at the moment, the formula is complex” he said sighing. “The symptoms won’t appear for at least 24 hours, but in your situation with your mutated DNA, it could happen quicker. I suggest you two try to distance yourselves from others for at least 3 days, especially each other if you have no plans to compromise your professional relationship”
“We’re best friends, we live together….” Peter said sighing. “And we have nowhere else to go”
The doctor nodded “well…try your best to self quarantine. And if worst comes to worst just um….give into it” he said
“What?” You asked confused, not believing what he just said
“Have sex with each other my dear” he said
“I heard you, but I can’t believe you suggested it” you said shocked.
“It isn’t going to harm you, in fact it will alleviate the symptoms. It’s better than the alternative” he said “lying in a pool of your sweat, shaking and moaning in an attempt to get relief. In this case, sex IS the best medicine” he said.
You didn’t even want to look at Peter. You just sighed and nodded.
“Well, I have some murder victims to attend to. You two have fun and stay safe” he said with a wink.
You rolled your eyes and swiftly left the police station. You and Peter didn’t talk the whole way home. You were worried that your feelings for Peter would get in the way of the situation. You were afraid you wouldn’t be able to hold back. No matter how desperate he became, what if he didn’t want you?
When you arrived back home you took off your mask as soon as you got inside. For the first time since the accident, you looked at Peter.
“I’m um…..I’m gonna go to my room” you said.
“Wait {y/n} we need to talk about this” he said
“Why? We both know what’s gonna happen in the next 24 hours, we’re going to go insane. And we’re best friends….we can’t….fuck each other”
“What if we don’t have a choice?”
“We do, we isolate from each other. We suffer for a few days and then everything will go back to normal, or at least our version of normal” you said.
He nodded “you’re right, we can get through this” he said “I guess I’ll see you in a few days when this is all over?”
You nodded “yeah” you said going to your room and locking the door. You changed into some comfortable clothes in hopes of just attempting to sleep it off. But you were so wrong.
• • • • •
Within a short 6 hours, you were already feeling the effects of the smoke. Sensing Peter, and his own distress, on the other side of the wall didn’t help. You were sweating and couldn’t keep still. All your thoughts were absolutely filthy. Touching yourself wasn’t helping satisfy you and you were going crazy.
You decided to sneak out of your room to get a glass of water to alleviate the burning feeling in your body.
You snuck out to the kitchen and got a bottle of cold water out of the fridge, guzzling it like your life depended on it. Just as you were about to return to your room Peter’s door opened.
He was drenched in sweat, his face red. He wasn’t wearing a shirt, which didn’t help your situation at all.
“Fuck” he groaned
You could feel yourself finding it harder to stay away from him. You started breathing deeply, getting more sweaty and more horny. You immediately tried to retreat back to your room.
“{y/n} don’t, we need to face this” he said
“Peter no! We can’t do this! We can’t be near each other”
“I can’t do this anymore, it hasn’t even been 12 hours yet and I’m desperate”
“I’m not gonna ruin our friendship by fucking you Peter, I can’t do that, I can’t lose you!” You yelled, getting more frustrated by the minute.
You were trying so hard, but between the sight of his toned bare chest, the desperation in his voice, his big brown eyes, and the burning sensation in your core, you couldn’t help it. All of your emotions faded away, your brain becoming a fog, now you were just a horny mess and the only thing that mattered was getting relief.
“Fuck it” you said walking over to him, pressing your lips to his in a needy and passionate kiss. You both became a moaning mess as your mouths molded together.
“Jump babygirl” Peter whispered.
You did as you were told, jumping up and wrapping your legs around his torso. He carried you to his bedroom and practically threw you down on the bed.
You quickly discarded each other’s clothes, trying to be as quick as possible. You were desperate for relief.
“Peter, I need you in me, fuck” you begged.
“Fuck, I can’t wait to feel you around me” he groaned before quickly pushing into you.
You both moaned loudly at the contact. It felt like pure bliss. The moans coming out the both of you were obscene and loud.
You’d obviously had sex before, but never with Peter, or your new spider senses, and certainly not hopped up from a sex bomb. You felt so good that it almost didn’t matter that you were actually having sex with your best friend.
“Oh fuck, it feels so good! Don’t stop!” You moaned loudly as he relentlessly pounded into you.
“So tight, fuck baby girl!”
“Shit…your cock is so big!” You said. You weren’t normally like this, but this situation was different. You couldn’t help it.
Ordinarily you would have been shy about being affectionate with anyone, but the effects of the sex bomb were taking over you, making you super horny and super confident. In fact, you were so hungry for sex that your feelings for Peter weren’t even on your mind.
You’d thought about sleeping with Peter before, a side effect of your crush on him, but you were never comfortable with initiating anything. He didn’t even know you had a crush on him, you were too shy to tell him for fear it would wreck your friendship.
But at this point, in your current state, you both needed to fuck someone so bad that it didn’t matter. There were no feelings. No regrets. Not a feral need to get relief.
By now the two of you were drenched in sweat and still so needy for touch. At some point you got so needy that you flipped him over so you were on top, something you wouldn’t ordinarily be brave enough to do.
“I’m gonna fuck you stupid Parker, fuck it’s gonna feel so good” you groaned as you started riding him. Watching him come undone underneath you, and the feeling between your legs, only egged you on to grind hard and faster.
The two of you were practically screaming, unable to form words at this point. You were so horny that you were constantly switching positions, hungry for anything and everything you could think of to do to each other.
“I’m gonna cum!” You yelled
“Me too, fuck!”
Within seconds the two of you were moaning each other’s names over and over between pornographic moaning. You compared next to each other, panting and still moaning softly. You felt so much relief at that point, but it didn’t last long. You needed more.
• • • • •
The next two days were consumed with constant sex with Peter. You didn’t know the difference between night and day, you didn’t even notice the days passing. Each time you fucked each other it got more and more intense, more and more filthy.
At the moment he had you pinned against the wall, pounding into you from behind, as he fondled your breasts.
“Oh Peter, oh fuck!” You moaned loudly as he hit that spot that drove you crazy.
“You like that baby?” He groaned, continuing at the same angle so could keep hitting your sweet spot.
“Yes, don’t stop!” You moaned, searching for anything you could grip onto. When you couldn’t find anything within reach you reached down to place your hands on Peter’s, which were still squeezing your breasts.
Getting bored with the position, Peter pulled out you and turned you around. He picked you up and carried you to the bathroom. He quickly turned on the shower and climbed in, still holding onto you.
When he set you down he immediately pressed his lips to yours and slid back into you. The two of you moaned into each others’ mouth, finally feeling satisfied again from being back into contact with each others’ bodies.
The shower was steamy, the water hot against your skin. The feeling of him in you, pounding relentlessly, was pushing over the edge quickly. You’d lost count of how many times the two of you had climaxed, you didn’t even know how much time had passed.
At some point you felt your legs getting weak, you knew what was coming.
“Peter!” You moaned loudly “I’m gonna…..fuck!!!” You screamed as your climax hit you sooner than you thought.
You felt him hit his not too long after, hearing him moan out your name.
The two of you were breathing deeply and trying to catch your breath. Things suddenly started to get a lot clearer. The fog in your brain started to dissipate. Minutes later you came back to reality.
You felt a bit confused, not sure how you got into the shower. You got a chill up your spine when you suddenly felt someone else touching you. You looked up into a familiar set of brown doe eyes and froze.
“Peter?”
“{y/n}, fuck….did we? Have we?”
“Oh shit….” You said covering yourself up mortified. You climbed out of the shower, grabbing a towel from the shelf and retreating to your room.
What the hell had you done? You had promised yourself you wouldn’t do this. You told yourself to stay in your room until the effects of the bomb wore off. You tried to jog your own memory in order to figure out how this happened. Suddenly your last memory flooded into your mind. You had been in the kitchen trying to cool down with a bottle of water, Peter walked out, and then everything after that was a blur.
You dried off and got dressed. You decided to check your phone only to realize that two days had passed. Had you been fucking Peter for that whole time?
You needed to get some air and clear your head. so You decided to go for a walk. You avoided Peter as you left.
You walked around Queens for a couple of hours. It was starting to get dark and you knew you’d have to go back to the apartment eventually, you didn’t have anywhere else to go.
You finally arrived back at the apartment around 8:30pm. You saw Peter sitting in the couch. His gaze caught yours and all you could do was stand there in silence and look at him. Rather than avoiding him, you just sighed and sat down next to him.
“I’m sorry” you said
“Me too”
You didn’t say anything else to each other, you were both lost for words. The longer you sat there, vague memories from the past few days came flooding into your head. You could see you and Peter doing things to each other you’d never even imagined you do. You felt your face getting bright red and looked over at him.
“How-how much do you remember?” You asked
“Most of it. I can’t believe we did that”
You nodded “I know…..” you said sighing.
“Do you feel better though?” He asked.
“Yes, and no. The effects of the bomb are gone, but now I feel…..gross.” You rubbed your face with your hands. “I can’t believe I did what I did to you….”
“{y/n}, that isn’t gonna change anything. We both did things we regret. But we were under the influence of a powerful drug made by criminals. This won’t change our friendship. You’re still my best friend. We can process this together and hopefully move on.” He said. “I’ve literally lost everything and everyone from my past. I’m not losing you too, you’re all I’ve got”
Although you still felt regret, you were happy that he wanted things to remain somewhat normal. That he still wanted you in his life. You leaned over and hugged him tightly.
“I’m not going anywhere Peter” you said softly, feeling him hug you back.
You knew it would take a lot to work through this. You knew over time you’d remember more and more about your sex bomb induced escapades, but you weren’t going to let that ruin your friendship. If anything, you hoped it would only make your bond with him stronger.
“We should go see the doctor tomorrow” you said chuckling. “Just to talk, reassure him we’re not dead”
He chuckled “agreed”

An excerpt from The Bezzle
Tumblr media
I'm on tour with my new novel The Bezzle! Catch me next in SALT LAKE CITY (Feb 21, Weller Book Works) and SAN DIEGO (Feb 22, Mysterious Galaxy). After that, it's LA, Seattle, Portland, Phoenix and more!
Tumblr media
Today, I'm bringing you part one of an excerpt from Chapter 14 of The Bezzle, my next novel, which drops on Feb 20. It's an ice-cold revenge technothriller starring Martin Hench, a two-fisted forensic accountant specialized in high-tech fraud:
https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250865878/thebezzle
Hench is the Zelig of high-tech fraud, a character who's spent 40 years in Silicon Valley unwinding every tortured scheme hatched by tech-bros who view the spreadsheet as a teleporter that whisks other peoples' money into their own bank-accounts. This setup is allowing me to write a whole string of these books, each of which unwinds a different scam from tech's past, present and future, starting with last year's Red Team Blues (now in paperback!), a novel that whose high-intensity thriller plotline is also a masterclass in why cryptocurrency is a scam:
https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250865854/redteamblues
Turning financial scams into entertainment is important work. Finance's most devastating defense is the Shield Of Boringness (h/t Dana Clare) – tactically deployed complexity designed to induce the state that finance bros call "MEGO" ("my eyes glaze over"). By combining jargon and obfuscation, the most monstrous criminals of our age have been able to repeatedly bring our civilization to the brink of collapse (remember 2008?) and then spin their way out of it.
Turning these schemes into entertainment is hard, necessary work, because it incinerates the respectable suit and tie and leaves the naked dishonesty of the finance sector on display for all to see. In The Big Short, they recruited Margot Robbie to explain synthetic CDOs from a bubble-bath. And John Oliver does this every week on Last Week Tonight, coming up with endlessly imaginative stunts and gags to flense the bullshit, laying the scam economy open to the bone.
This was my inspiration for the Hench novels (I've written and sold three of these, of which The Bezzle is number two; I've got at least two more planned). Could I use the same narrative tactics I used to explain mass surveillance, cryptography and infosec in the Little Brother books to turn scams into entertainment, and entertainment into the necessary, informed outrage that might precipitate change?
The main storyline in The Bezzle concerns one of the most gruesome scams in today's America: prison-tech, which sees America's vast army of prisoners being stripped of letters, calls, in-person visits, parcels, libraries and continuing ed in favor of cheap tablets that bilk prisoners and their families of eye-watering sums for every click they make:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/02/14/minnesota-nice/#shitty-technology-adoption-curve
But each Hench novel has a variety of side-quests that work to expose different kinds of financial chicanery. The Bezzle also contains explainers on the workings of MLMs/Ponzis (and how Gerry Ford and Betsy DeVos's father-in-law legalized one of the most destructive forces in America) and the way that oligarchs, foreign and domestic, use Real Estate Investment Trusts to hide their money and destroy our cities.
And there's a subplot about music-royalty theft, a form of pernicious wage theft that is present up and down the music industry supply-chain. This is a subject that came up a lot when Rebecca Giblin and I were researching and writing Chokepoint Capitalism, our 2022 book about creative labor markets:
https://chokepointcapitalism.com/
Two of the standout cases from that research formed the nucleus of the subplot in The Bezzle, the case of Leonard Cohen's batshit manager who stole millions from him and then went to prison for stalking him, leaving him virtually penniless and forced to keep touring to keep himself fed:
https://www.theguardian.com/music/2012/apr/19/leonard-cohen-former-manager-jailed
The other was George Clinton, whose manager forged his signature on a royalty assignment, then used the stolen money to defend himself against Clinton's attempts to wrestle his rights back and even to sue Clinton for defamation for writing about the caper in his memoir:
https://www.musicconnection.com/the-legal-beat-george-clinton-wins-defamation-case/
That's the tale that this excerpt – which I'll be serializing in six parts over the coming week – tells, in fictionalized form. It's not Margot Robbie in a bubble-bath, it's not a John Oliver monologue, but I think it's pretty goddamned good.
I'm leaving for a long, multi-city, multi-country, multi-continent tour with The Bezzle next Wednesday, starting with an event at Weller Bookworks in Salt Lake City on the 21st:
https://www.wellerbookworks.com/event/store-cory-doctorow-feb-21-630-pm
I'll in be in San Diego on the 22nd at Mysterious Galaxy:
https://www.mystgalaxy.com/22224Doctorow
And then it's on to LA (with Adam Conover), Seattle (with Neal Stephenson), Portland, Phoenix and beyond:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/02/16/narrative-capitalism/#bezzle-tour
I hope you'll come out for the tour (and bring your friends)!
Tumblr media
Between 1972 and 1978, Steve Soul (a.k.a. Stefon Magner) had a string of sixteen Billboard Hot 100 singles, one of which cracked the Top 10 and won him an appearance on Soul Train. He is largely forgotten today, except by hip-hop producers who prize his tracks as a source of deep, funky grooves. They sampled the hell out of him, not least because his rights were controlled by Inglewood Jams, a clearinghouse for obscure funk tracks that charged less than half of what the Big Three labels extracted for each sample license.
Even at that lower rate, those license payments would have set Stefon up for a comfortable retirement, especially when added to his Social Security and the disability check from Dodgers Stadium, where he cleaned floors for more than a decade before he fell down a beer-slicked bleacher and cracked two of his lumbar discs. But Stefon didn’t get a dime. His former manager, Chuy Flores, forged his signature on a copyright assignment in 1976. Stefon didn’t discover this fact until 1979, because Chuy kept cutting him royalty checks, even as Stefon’s band broke up and those royalties trickled off. In Stefon’s telling, the band broke up because the rest of the act—especially the three-piece rhythm section of two percussionists and a beautiful bass player with a natural afro and a wild, infectious hip-wiggle while she played—were too coked up to make it to rehearsal, making their performances into shambling wreckages and their studio sessions into vicious bickerfests. To hear the band tell of it, Stefon had bad LSD (“Lead Singer Disease”) and decided he didn’t need the rest of them. One thing they all agreed on: there was no way Stefon would have signed over the band’s earnings to Chuy, who was little more than a glorified bookkeeper, with Stefon hustling all their bookings and even ordering taxis to his bandmates’ houses to make sure they showed up at the studio or the club on time. Stefon remembered October of ’79 well. He’d been waiting with dread for the envelope from Chuy. The previous royalty check, in July, had been under $250. The previous quarter’s had been over $1,000. This quarter’s might have zero. Stefon needed the money. His 1972 Ford Galaxie needed a new transmission. He couldn’t keep driving it in first.
The envelope arrived late, the day before Halloween, and for a brief moment, Stefon was overcome by an incredible, unbelieving elation: Chuy’s laboriously typewritten royalty statement ended with the miraculous figure of $7,421.16. Seven thousand dollars! It was more than two years’ royalties, all in one go! He could fix the Galaxie’s transmission and get the ragtop patched, and still have money left over for his back rent, his bar tab, his child support, and a fine steak dinner, and even then, he’d end the month with money in his savings account.
But there was no check in the envelope. Stefon shook the envelope, carefully unfolded the royalty statement to ensure that there was no check stapled to its back, went downstairs to the apartment building lobby and rechecked his mailbox.
Finally, he called Chuy.
“Chuy, man, you forgot to put a check in the envelope.”
“I didn’t forget, Steve. Read the paperwork again. You gotta send me a check.”
“What the fuck? That’s not funny, Chuy.”
“I ain’t joking, Steve. I been advancing you royalties for more than three years, but you haven’t earned nothing new since then—no new recordings. I can’t afford to carry you no more.”
“Say what?”
Chuy explained it to him like he was a toddler. “Remember when you signed over your royalties to me in ’76? Every dime I’ve sent you since then was an advance on your future recordings, only you haven’t had none of those, so I’m cutting you off and calling in your note. I’m sorry, Steve, but I ain’t a charity. You don’t work, you don’t earn. This is America, brother. No free lunches.”
“After I did what in ’76?”
“Steve, in 1976 you signed over all your royalties to me. We agreed, man! I can’t believe you don’t remember this! You came over to my spot and I told you how it was and you said you needed money to cover the extra horns for the studio session on Fight Fire with Water. I told you I’d cover them and you’d sign over all your royalties to me.”
Stefon was briefly speechless. Chuy had paid the sidemen on that session, but that was because Chuy owed him a thousand bucks for a string of private parties they’d played for some of Chuy’s cronies. Chuy had been stiffing him for months and Stefon had agreed to swap the session fees for the horn players in exchange for wiping out the debt, which had been getting in the way of their professional relationship.
“Chuy, you know it didn’t happen that way. What the fuck are you talking about?”
“I’m talking about when you signed over all your royalties to me. And you know what? I don’t like your tone. I’ve carried your ass for years now, sent you all that money out of my own pocket, and now you gotta pay up. My generosity’s run out. When you gonna send me a check?”
Of course, it was a gambit. It put Stefon on tilt, got him to say a lot of ill-advised things over the phone, which Chuy secretly recorded. It also prompted Stefon to take a swing at Chuy, which Chuy dived on, shamming that he’d had a soft-tissue injury in his neck, bringing suit for damages and pressing an aggravated-assault charge.
He dropped all that once Stefon agreed not to keep on with any claims about the forged signature; Stefon went on to become a good husband, a good father, and a hard worker. And if cleaning floors at Dodgers Stadium wasn’t what he’d dreamed of when he was headlining on Soul Train, at least he never missed a game, and his boy came most weekends and watched with him. Stefon’s supervisor didn’t care.
But the stolen royalties ate at him, especially when he started hearing his licks every time he turned on the radio. His voice, even. Chuy Flores had a fully paid-off three-bedroom in Eagle Rock and two cars and two ex-wives and three kids he was paying child support on, and Stefon sometimes drove past Chuy Flores’s house to look at his fancy palm trees all wrapped up in strings of Christmas lights and think about who paid for them.
